Greetings! Wow, it's sure been a while since I've posted on the blog.<br />
<br />
Lots has happened since then, too much to put in a single post, but here's some current news.<br />
<br />
Retreats and Fiber events! June 20th through 23rd I will be in Rochester, MN at the Stockinette Zombie retreat. If you aren't familiar with podcaster Megan and Amy, the Stockinette Zombies, you should find them on ITunes and Blip and everywhere else their podcasts are available and check them out. Two funny, witty, wonderful women -- Megan and Amy have cooked up a great retreat and marketplace. I'm pleased as punch to be able to attend the retreat.... I'll see if I get some relaxing time in. That's to be seen!<br />
<br />
Meanwhile, the same weekend, George and oldest daughter Renee will be attending the <a href="http://www.fiberandfolk.com/">Midwest Fiber and Folk Art Fair</a> in Grayslake, IL. They will have the bulk of our goodies, including a fresh batch of George's Yarn Buddy's!<br />
<br />
We've been busy dyeing lots and lots of yarn -- we've got several new colors that have been making an appearance this year. There are more to come, but photographing yarn has lately been put on the back burner. I hope you can bear with me as I get things updated little by little!<br />
<br />
The animals and farm will be well taken care of by George's brother, who farm sits for us. And daughter Rachel will be making sure our baby chicks are well tended, when she's not running off to her movie theater job.<br />
<br />
After that bit of fun, we will be vending on Saturdays in July at Meg Swansen's Knitting Camp up in Marshfield, WI. We've done this for a few years now, and it's so great to see all of the campers and their gorgeous, stunning creations!!!<br />
<br />
In August we will be vending at <a href="http://www.knittinguniverse.com/Midwest/">Stitches Midwest.</a> We are very excited to be adding this show to our schedule. See you in Schaumburg!!!<br />
<br />
I've also got a surprise for the readers of this post...... you are the proud recipients of a coupon code to use..... Summer2013 will get you 15% off your next yarn purchase. The code is good until Labor Day, so use it early and often!!!<br />
<br />
Happy knitting, and hopefully I will see you soon!</div>

And, no, I don't mean Madison, but that's busy too. <br /><br />We've spent the last 2 weekends at fiber shows, namely the Janesville Knit In in Milton, Wisconsin and last weekend at Sheep In The City in Milwaukee. Both shows were great, and now it's time to restock! Too bad the yarn bases aren't here yet. Soon tho!<br /><br />This weekend our sheep are being sheared. Well, at least the ewes are. I'll try to get pics, but I'm not making any promises. It's going to be cold and snowy. Good thing the girls like the cold weather!<br /><br />It's going to be George and I and Bob, our shearer. Hopefully George's brother will be around, but if not -- we've done it before, we'll do it again!<br /><br />R1 and R2, the darling daughters, are off to Solo and Ensamble in DeForest. The little -- or, rather, TALL darlings -- both are taller than we are -- need to be at school by 6 a.m. on Saturday morning -- That's dedication! They are playing a duet together and then R1 is playing an ensemble with friends. R2 will be support staff for her friends -- as it should be!<br /><br />Thankfully our chickens are back to laying eggs. They took a break over the winter, and it was a pain in the a** to buy eggs at the store. You get spoiled. If anyone wants any beautiful, yummy, free-range eggs, let me know, we've got some coming every day again!<br /><br />Take care.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119086173288332119.post-62543959595802980432010-12-30T10:29:00.000-08:002010-12-30T10:34:00.498-08:00It's been a WhileHoly smokes, I can't believe this much time has passed since I've posted to the blog... Time flies, even when you're not having fun.... Also known as too much work to do -- and that's about all I can say about that!!<br /><br />It's really foggy today. Visibility of less than a quarter of a mile where I live, which means we can't see the road from the house. Very isolated feeling, but I like it.<br /><br />Today's the perfect day to bake some bread, and I think I'll select something from my all time favorite bread book -- Artisan Bread in 5 minutes a day by Jeff Hertzberg.<br /><br /><a href="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/517thxd9VvL._SL160_PIsitb-sticker-arrow-dp,TopRight,12,-18_SH30_OU01_AA160_.jpg"></a><br /><br />I will be spending the weekend finishing up some knitting and hopefully taking some pictures. How about you?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119086173288332119.post-52015251212050396252010-06-07T12:40:00.000-07:002010-06-07T12:44:04.256-07:00Musings.......Well, the llamas were sheared last Sunday -- man, are they big babies! Durante was crying and trying to lay down. He about knocked R1 into the water trough in the process!!!<br /><br />Percy wasn't much better. He also mad1e a fuss. Much moaning and crying -- we even though he'd spit at R2 (but he didn't, thank goodness!)<br /><br />A few weeks ago we were not too happy all of the rain was missing us -- but after the last week I think we've had enough for a little while! Hay needs to be baled, but with a threat of rain every couple of days, patience is high on the list around here. <br /><br />Oh, and R2 graduates from 8th grade this week! We're so pleased!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119086173288332119.post-867353400017040172010-05-23T13:41:00.000-07:002010-05-23T13:43:57.848-07:00Time flies when we're having fun!Well, I don't have any excuses that are worthy to explain my lengthy absence. Work, work, work, planting plants, various greenhouse dutes, regular mom stuff.<br /><br />I'll have to take some picctures of the prospective garden patch and show you the asparagus patch/rhubarb patch. <br /><br />Be back soon.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119086173288332119.post-73741715694854794082010-03-15T12:06:00.000-07:002010-03-15T12:12:10.790-07:00Fun was had by all!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8ZEx0dVF4Kwk0ZIgdjlwy8Dh3f5HzVSPorTaotR_XFvaOlsOqK0uSqi1yG6tBlTuLs_fOc2pBXpxXchmNtVW_gbQCEz0LWiwVgiOhajYz8wQq4WMSwERNdMqZVtTaNgfGKUs0G3nysYyx/s1600-h/LisaFeatherweightCardigan.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8ZEx0dVF4Kwk0ZIgdjlwy8Dh3f5HzVSPorTaotR_XFvaOlsOqK0uSqi1yG6tBlTuLs_fOc2pBXpxXchmNtVW_gbQCEz0LWiwVgiOhajYz8wQq4WMSwERNdMqZVtTaNgfGKUs0G3nysYyx/s320/LisaFeatherweightCardigan.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5448940311716557490" /></a><br />What can I say, I believe fun was had by all!!! I had tons of help from my hubby setting up -- R1 helped out on Saturday (R2 had a sleepover, so she was excused) but there were times I could have used 4 people to check out all of the shoppers we had!!! I didn't take many pics, but here's a cute one of Lisa, one of "my girls" and the Featherweight Cardigan she knit from my MCN laceweight in Blush -- just absolutely gorgeous in person!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119086173288332119.post-71196303714770259812010-03-10T10:36:00.000-08:002010-03-10T10:42:47.727-08:00Hold onto Your Hat!I forgot to tell you -- stop by my booth this weekend at the MKG Knit-In and I'll have some </em><strong>bling</em><strong> and a giveaway, courtesy of a great local knitting mag that's now only available on-line.

<br />I have some great news in store, to be shared all in due time, ladies, all in due time!!! Long, long weekend, but so many great people and soo much great fun!</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>Here's a shot of our booth space -- what do you think?? Pretty cool, huh?</div><div> </div><div> </div><div>The March Madness is under way. First we were vendors at the Madison Knitting Guild Meeting March 8. We were vendors with our great friends Heather and Melissa from The Sow's Ear in Verona, Wi. If you've never been there, you definitely need to check them out, it's a great shop!</div><div> </div><div>Of course I forgot to bring my camera and take pictures, but fun was had by all Monday night.</div><div>My husband and daughter R1 were helpers and I sure needed their help!</div><div> </div><div>Melissa Leapman was the speaker for the evening and she stopped by our booth for some fibery goodness. She spotted R1's legging she knit from our oatmeal Icelandic yarn -- she's tall, so it's long and not easy to miss. It's R1's first lace project -- right up Melissa's alley, of course -- and she gave R1 great praise and encouragement that last night she picked up legging 2 and started knitting it again (she was suffering from single leggingitis) . I've always liked Melissa's books, but I really like her as a person -- so encouraging and just a great personality!! I only wish I was able to take her class last weekend at Susan's, but I was busy dyeing. I guess you'll se the results of that on Saturday!</div><div> </div><div>See you at the Knit In!!!</div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119086173288332119.post-22360946420361979142010-02-23T10:06:00.000-08:002010-02-23T10:23:05.330-08:00Getting Ready.........<div>Well, gosh yarn it, I'm back!!!!!! You know how life keeps you crazy busy sometimes? That's been life here at Sun Valley Farm for quite a bit. We did get away over the holidays to the beaches of Florida for 2 weeks -- fun was had by all, and everyone back at the farm survived with the help of DH's brother Chuck -- thanks Chuck!!!</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>But on the very near horizon we've been getting ready for Fiber Festivals this spring, and it's been taking up all of the spare time we can find around here..........</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>This weekend, February 26, 27 and 28 we're off to Oak Creek, WI (near Milwaukee) for the Sheep In the City Getaway -- a wonderful fiber event put on by Jan of Just 4 Ewe fiber shop. We're loading the truck and trailer up with Icelandic roving, Icelandic yarn and Merino blends we've hand-dyed into the most gorgeous colors!!! I say we've been dyeing because DH is very much the dyer -- he comes up with the most beautiful colors!!! There's no way I could get all of this done by myself, working off the farm all day and everything, that we have decided to divide and conquer to accomplish everything. It's all quite simple, really.... We take turns! Really! And it works beautifully and harmoniously. Too bad we can't get the girls to do that -- but DD1 and DD2 are 14 and 16 now, so what can I say?</div><div><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_o7xQxL2gxotHfvjpfVXOCb4QiU0jWt3CE9_QGWa6JxoZX5jCpi6urf9ERA5ukHMCTIvludLX4cL165xVqLyFGBt7TZFZG4Z7Iiz16xW914gFqbKsB5BnPojF35h93EtCF7ykxSoFoz70/s1600-h/005.JPG"><img style="MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 240px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 134px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441504192982569122" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_o7xQxL2gxotHfvjpfVXOCb4QiU0jWt3CE9_QGWa6JxoZX5jCpi6urf9ERA5ukHMCTIvludLX4cL165xVqLyFGBt7TZFZG4Z7Iiz16xW914gFqbKsB5BnPojF35h93EtCF7ykxSoFoz70/s320/005.JPG" /></a></div></div><div> </div><div>This is DD2 in all of her glory!!! Quite the character, don't you think? This was taken by DD1 at a local antique car show, and was one of the rare times out and about they didn't argue -- at least not in our presence!!!</div><div> </div><div> </div><div> </div><div>Anyway, I digress. Getting ready for Fiber shows has started extremely early at SVF -- we're also vendors at the Madison Knitter's Guild meeting on March 6, then we're vending at the Madison Knitter's Guild Knit In on March 13 -- so 3 shows in about 2 week's time is a lot to prepare for. Not much time in between for restocking, so we'll see what happens!</div><div> </div><div>Thankfully we'll have the sheep sheared later in March this year -- no lambs this spring at Sun Valley, we've felt the need to take a year off. We're expecting some beautiful fleeces from everyone this spring since the girls don't have to worry about growing babies, and they do look spectacular, that's for sure! When I find the camera, I can upload some recent pics of yarn and sheep, but right now I'm stuck with what's on here, and it ain't much!</div><div> </div><div>I'm looking forward to spending some quality time with Bea, my Lendrum DT spinning wheel this weekend. Seems going to a Fiber show is the only time I get to sit down with her, at least for a little bit during the day, but extensively at night after the show back in the hotel room. We're always joined by a nice glass of wine, nice food -- life is good!</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119086173288332119.post-2752174013030903652009-10-21T11:59:00.000-07:002009-10-21T12:06:04.192-07:00Yarn, Dyeing and New FriendsWell, it's sure been a while since I've updated things. Life has been crazier than usual at Sun Valley Farm.<br /><br />Where to begin...... Rachel has been playing volleyball, and has been doing a great job for her first year. She just had her last game this week and did an awesome job serving and diving for balls. Her team is awesome!!!<br /><br />Renee has been practicing her driving skills and her negotiating skills. Kudos to her on both things, she's doing great!!! <br /><br />We had a bunch of sophomores over to our house before Homecoming to build a float and keep it safe from the other grades so it wouldn't be trashed. They did a nice job!!!<br /><br />George pulled the float in the Homecoming parade, but it did get rained on -- :-( <br />The sophomores should be proud, taking 2nd place overall in the competition. Good job, girls!!<br /><br />Last but not least, we've been dye yarn like crazy -- man, I need to update my etsy store -- heck, I need to create it!!!<br /><br />But the reason for all of the fuss was a visit to our farm by the Cultured Purls of Crystal Lake, Illinois, many of whom I met at the Midwest Fiber and Folk Art Fair in Woodstock, IL this past summer. The ladies came to New Glarus for a retreat, discovered I wasn't too far away, and asked to come on over. <br /><br />George cooked lunch for everyone -- 22+ ladies -- and Renee and Rachel gave farm tours to everyone who ventured outside, which was a beautiful Fall day. Mother Nature couldn't have cooperated any more than if we gave her lunch too!!!<br /><br />Fun was had by all and we sold a bunch of yarn. <br /><br />Thanks, ladies, and we look forward to another gathering in the not to distant future!!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119086173288332119.post-40867630938278088452009-09-01T20:06:00.000-07:002009-09-01T20:13:01.638-07:00First days of school! Lamb separation.Well, today was Rachel's first day of school. Boy, was it strange to have everyone up at the same time. The house was sure noisey. Good thing the neighbors don't live so close by. We're the only ones with school-age children for a good mile or so. Not that we're THAT loud!! But I swear the sheep can be. They are especially loud if they are protesting something -- i.e. which pasture we're letting them graze in.<br /><br />Renee starts her sophomore year tomorrow. She can't wait. We're fortunate, in more ways than I can count, but going to school has always been something my kids like to do. They love it. I'm so glad it's not a struggle. I think it's more of a struggle for George and I to keep up with all the things the girls are doing lately. <br /><br />I think we're about ready for WSWF in a week. We sold some sheep recently and they're going to their new home on Monday. Yeah!!! <br /><br />We're also starting to separate the ram lambs from the ewe herd. All of the lambs were separated from their moms when we weaned everyone. But now that the nights are getting cooler (downright cold if you ask me!!) it's best to start the sorting process so make sure there are no oops babies in the spring.<br /><br />It's always cute to see the little rams act like "they're all that". The big rams let the pretend, at least for now, until they need to learn their place in the herd.<br /><br />More on that later, and hopefully some pics soon! There's not enough time in the day!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119086173288332119.post-65281936114356848962009-08-24T07:27:00.000-07:002009-08-24T07:33:06.539-07:00Dieing to get some dyeing done!!!Well, it's been busy at Sun Valley's homestead lately. Lots of appointments to attend, getting the girls ready for school. Glad those are almost all completed.<br /><br />We've been busy checking on the sheep and getting their health records in order. It's just something that needs to be done and it gets away from me sometimes. With 100+ sheep to keep organized, it does take time or it gets complicated real fast.<br /><br />Oh, and then there's the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival coming up right around the corner!! I have 2 weeks to go and then it's pack everything up, time to head out!! There's still much to do, but Mr. SunValleyFibers will make sure I get everything done. He's good that way.<br /><br />We've also been working on a brick patio in the backyard off the kitchen. That's been taking up some time. But boy, does it look beautiful! It will be nice to get flowers planted around when it's done. That will finish everything off nicely!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119086173288332119.post-39647414659515827722009-08-10T13:11:00.000-07:002009-08-10T13:18:15.611-07:00Yesterday's storms --Yesterday afternoon, oh boy did Mother Nature let loose! There were some wild winds and lots of thing toppled over. Thankfully all of us were fine (animals included) but I will have to put up some pics of the damage.<br /><br />We had to rescue a ewe that found herself pinned under the old "fort" the girls played on when they were little. A ladder, platform and slide think with a roof on top.<br /><br />The sheep were cute, they used to scratch their backs on the slide and they'd hang out in the shade underneath the platform. Yeah, until Mother nature ripped the roof off and knocked it over on poor "Survivor" (newly named yearling ewe). <br /><br />Rachel had gone out in the pasture after seeing the fort tipped over to see what was up. She knew something was going on, because 2 lambs were hanging out by the fort, and they don't do that if nothing's going on. Sure enough, screams alerted us to get our butts out there ASAP!!! George and I ran out and hopped the fence, gave the for the old heave-ho, and Survivor limped off, favoring her left rear leg, but none the worse for the wear. You gotta love it when the sheep are strong and patient and take the world as it comes!<br /><br />Other than a huge feeder getting tipped over and the grill attempting to commit suicide off the back of the deck, all was well. Grill put back in place, feeder has to wait until the ground dries some so we don't make a huge mess with the backhoe, and all is well at the Sundstrom Farm.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119086173288332119.post-40726012670739683132009-08-10T13:10:00.000-07:002009-08-10T13:19:31.809-07:00Animal, Vegetable, MiracleI just discovered this blog -- <a href="http://www.animalvegetablemiracle.com/">Animal, Vegetable, Miracle</a> and I think it's terrific! I wanted to share it, so here it is -- give it a go! We've recently had the asparagus and morel dish -- I must say it's fabulous!!! I can't wait to try some more of their recipes.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119086173288332119.post-29678163751640498732009-08-07T11:38:00.000-07:002009-08-07T11:47:38.981-07:00Rainy DaysWell, finally some needed rain! There's always so much to be done, especially living on a working farm, that it's difficult to take a "day off". Factor in 100+ sheep and attempting to get ready for another fiber show and that's even more the case.<br /><br />After being married for 21+ years, I've come to the realization that my husband is a workaholic, but I can always get him to slow the pace down when we get a rainy day. It's a day to dawdle over a cup of coffee, hang out on the front porch, usually on the swing, and just marvel at all of it. Marvel at the fact that in spite of the state of the world today, we are carving out bit by bit our own piece of heaven. It's going to take time -- lots of time -- and tons of hard work, but we have finally realized that it's okay to not get everything on the list done today, to leave some for tomorrow and just savor the wonderful things we've already accomplished.<br /><br />There's always going to be weeds to pull, but the humming birds are beautiful to watch as they hover over and dart from flower to flower. The sheep love walking out in the rain and call to us as they walk past the house out to their favorite spots in the pasture. Just listening to the sound of the rain is calming. <br /><br />Yes, this is our bit of heaven. We are very thankful for it -- every day, every single day.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119086173288332119.post-21547787915433494392009-07-19T19:29:00.000-07:002009-07-19T19:33:59.669-07:00The MWF&FAF is over for 2009!Well, it's good to be home and unpacked, but what a wonderful fair and what great people!<br /><br />I met a ton of new people, had fun reconnecting with old friends, and sold a bunch of yarn and fiber -- thanks to everyone who bought something from me -- let me know how you use the fiber/yarn -- send pics!!!<br /><br />Renee was a great help, and we had lots of nice talks. She walked away with some awesome beads she found from a vendor there -- I found some beautiful earrings and a great doll from Oddest Goddess. <br /><br />Made some new friends named Bjorn and Rex from the St. Louis area -- can't wait for next year already!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2119086173288332119.post-50269640225220002892009-07-16T07:08:00.000-07:002009-07-16T07:10:50.176-07:00Midwest Fiber and Folk Art FairWell, I've almost got the truck packed and I'm ready to head to Woodstock, Illinois for the Fair.<br />My daughter Renee is coming along as support staff. I'll have to make sure I pay her well in food and knitting supplies.<br /><br />The whole family pitched in to make sure I had everything ready. I really appreciate their help. George will be holding down the fort at the farm while I'm gone -- and that's a LOT of work, with 120 Icelandic sheep, 2 llamas, 2 goats, numerous chickens and turkeys -- he's got his hands full!!!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06495773069270578382noreply@blogger.com0
